Project 2 Statement

Selected Image:

Client:
New York Public Library for the Performing Arts

Event:
“Jeepers Creepers, It’s Boris Karloff!” is a salute to the life and career of Boris Karloff. Born William Henry Pratt in England in 1887, Karloff became a horror-movie star playing the Monster in James Whale’s 1931 film Frankenstein. The evening will feature a guest appearance by the actor’s daughter, Sara Karloff.

Problem:
The NYPL requires a portrait of actor Boris Karloff as Frankenstein’s monster for the upcomming event to encourage attendance. The image will be used in a promotional poster and must appeal to a wide audience.

Solution:
Since the event is being held at the NYPL, I plan to use the text from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein novel, quotes from the films (both Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein), and other associated phrases to render a type-based portrait of Boris Karloff as the Monster.
